About Blueberry Plants (Rabbiteye - Delite Variety)
Blueberries are such a rewarding berry bush to grow. They are easy on the eye, can be planted most of the year round, are suitable for small spaces and (most importantly) the berries are delicious! Blueberries are our pick for elegant edible gardens as they look great in patio pots and make a wonderful edible hedge.
This variety is evergreen and has blue-green foliage, bright pink flowers and dark purple fruit. It will grow up to 1.5 metres tall if left untamed, but can be pruned to keep the size down.
Delite Blueberry plants are ideal for growing in the upper North Island. While some Blueberry plants need the winter chill to fruit, Delite is a Rabbiteye variety with low chilling requirements. This variety fruits in February, March and produces small, lighter blue fruit with a delicious flavour. When in flower, this bush has pretty white/light pink flowers.
Culinary Uses for Blueberries
Blueberries are often called one of natures 'superfoods' due to their high vitamin C and antioxidant levels. They are the perfect fresh lunchbox snack, or sprinkled over muesli. Blueberries can also be preserved and enjoyed over winter. If you have a glut of blueberries, they freeze well. Simply pop freshly picked, unwashed berries on a plate in the freezer and decant into a bag when frozen. Frozen blueberries are delicious in smoothies (try a banana-blueberry-milk combo) or muffins.
Blueberries are ready to pick about 7 days after turning blue. Keep picking regularly to encourage your plants to keep fruiting. (Healthy mature plants can produce up to 10 kg of fruit per growing season!) Don't wash blueberries before storing, as this causes them to rot.
Growing Conditions - Delite Blueberry Plants
Blueberries can be planted in most seasons. You should plant your Blueberry bush with another variety for good pollination, and plant them 1 metre apart if creating a hedge. We recommend planting thyme and basil nearby, as they are excellent companion plants for Blueberries.
Blueberries thrive with lots of sun but need rich, highly acidic and free draining soil. The better the soil, the better your blueberry crop will be. Water them regularly in the growing season - keep the soil moist but not soggy. Once established, this plant will survive light winds. It needs to be protected from frost while it is flowering or fruiting, but will survive light frosts at other times of the year.
When planting blueberries, mix a good amount of compost and sheep/manure pellets into your soil. If your soil isn't very acidic, you may need to adjust the Ph levels. (Read our tips for adjusting soil Ph here.) Top your plants up with some plant food in spring and summer. Avoid using Blood and Bone, or lime-based products.
What Type of Climate Do Delite Blueberry Plants Prefer?
Delite Blueberries are a Rabbiteye variety, which is best suited to growing in the northern parts of New Zealand, as they flower in early spring when there is risk of frost damage in cooler areas. They also need warm late summer/early autumn weather to fully ripen in the berries.
