What is White Alyssum?
Alyssum (Sweet, Alyssum, Carpet of Snow, Lobularia maritima) is an edible flower that comes from the coastal Mediterranean. It is a low-growing plant, that spreads across the ground (like drifts of snow). This annual has dense clusters of tiny white flowers that look picture perfect in a cottage, elegant or coastal garden. It has a sweet, honey-like scent and will continue flowering over a long period of time.
Alyssum makes an ideal border plant and is also great for underplanting fruit trees, or in a pot. All sorts of beneficial insects and bees love Alyssum, making it a good companion planting choice too.
Culinary Uses for White Alyssum (Carpet of Snow)
Alyssum leaves and blossoms are a fun edible garnish that can dress up fruit, snack or dessert trays.
Growing Conditions - White Alyssum (Carpet of Snow)
Alyssum is extremely easy to grow and is a very hardy plant. While it enjoys the sun and a little water, it can withstand part shade, most free-draining soil types and drought. (Which makes it ideal for parts of the garden where other plants struggle to thrive.) It will tolerate a very light frost, but not a heavy one. Alyssum likes to be planted near companion plants such as lettuce, peas and spinach.
Alyssum has a tendency to spread (it re-seeds readily), so it is best in a contained space.
What climate do Alyssum plants prefer?
Alyssum will flower most of the year round in milder climates, but it won't survive a heavy a heavy frost or snow. If you live in a colder part of New Zealand, we recommend that you sow your seeds in spring when the soil has warmed up - don't wait until autumn! If you live in a warmer area, you can sow from spring right through to autumn.
