Chives are perfect for a pot, a courtyard or apartment garden, and their gorgeous upright green leaves and purple blossoms look picture perfect in Mediterranean, cottage and elegant garden settings.
Culinary Uses for Chives
Chives are a versatile herb and are a delicious addition in lots of European, Mediterranean and north Asian recipes. Try them chopped up in an omelette, sprinkled over a baked potato or on top of a seafood chowder.
Growing Conditions - Chives
Chives can be planted in your herb garden any time from spring through to autumn. Carrots, mint, marigolds and tomatoes are good companion planting choices.
Chives are easy-care plants that prefer a mildly acidic but free draining soil. They grow best in part shade and when watered frequently (soil should be moist not soggy).
What type of climate do Chives prefer?
Chives can be planted any time from spring through to autumn. They are somewhat cold and frost-tolerant. This means they will tolerate the odd cold spell or light frost, but they won't survive hardy frosts, bitter temperatures or snow. If you live in a colder part of New Zealand, you could grow Chives inside over winter.
