What is the Flanders Poppy (Corn Poppy)?
"In Flanders Fields the poppies grow. Between the crosses, row on row." (John McCrae, In Flanders Field)
Flanders poppies are a symbol of remembrance for those who served in World War One (and subsequent conflicts) as they grew wildly on European battlefields. In Persian literature they are the flower of love.
Grow easycare Flanders Poppies in your cottage, or even elegant garden. They can be grown in large patio pots.
Culinary Uses for Flanders Poppy (Corn Poppies)
Flanders Poppies are often used in Middle Eastern and European Cuisine (especially baking). The black seeds are edible, and can be eaten either on their own or as an ingredient in bread.
Growing Conditions - Flanders Poppy (Corn Poppy)
Poppies are extremely easy to grow but don't like to be moved, so they are best grown from seed. This edible flower is an annual but it readily self-seeds, so it is best to plant your poppies somewhere that you don't mind them spreading.
Poppies enjoy full sun but will grow in most free draining soils (especially those that are mildly acidic). The seeds need light to germinate, so should simply be sprinkled on top of the soil and gently pressed down. Thin to 10 cm apart when they are about 3 cm tall. Companion plant with blue cornflowers for a stunning, bee-friendly combination in your garden.
In the right conditions, these flowers will grow up to 150 cm tall, but they don't like strong wind or frost. Flanders Poppies are moderately drought tolerant once established but prefer a little water. Don't fertilise your poppies.
