Rhubarb (Glaskins Perpetual) Plants
FRUIT-RHUB-1-5Regular price $9.50
Rhubarb is one of the garden's unsung heroes - an easy care plant that produces lots of fruit for winter desserts and delicious compotes. We love this plant because it is often productive at times when other kitchen garden plants are not, and it is a perennial, so it keeps producing each year.
Urban Bounty Rhubarb plants are sold in a 1.5 litre pot - they'll fill that empty space in your garden before you know it!
What is Rhubarb?
As long as you give it lots of plant food (compost and manure pellets) Rhubarb is an easy-care fruit plant that adds a splash of green to your garden the whole year round. Although it will work in a courtyard garden, you will need to divide the plant every now and then to keep it from taking up too much space.
Glaskin's Perpetual is an early maturing variety with long slender stalks.
Culinary Uses for Rhubarb
Rhubarb is a delicious fruit that needs to be cooked. Harvest the edible stem, but discard the poisonous leaves. Use the pink, red and green stalks in compotes or roast them with orange and brown sugar.
Growing Conditions - Glaskin's Perpetual Rhubarb
Rhubarb likes full sun and lots of food. It does best in slightly acidic, rich, free-draining soil. This easy-care plant tolerates a light frost, wind and mild drought (although prolonged periods without water will affect the harvest quality and quantity). Plant this seedling in autumn or late spring. Harvest lightly the first year by cutting the outer stalks as needed. This will encourage it to clump up for the next season.
Onions, Garlic and brassicas (such as Cauliflower and Broccoli) are good companion plants for rhubarb.
