What is Lemon Grass?
Lemon grass is a quintessential tropical plant used in South East Asian cuisine. This shrub-like herb has a citrus-like scent but its flavour is a more of a cross between lemon and mint.
Culinary Uses for Lemon Grass
Try it in teas and cocktails for a refreshing flavour. This plant is traditional used in Thai curries and soups like Tom Yum. (Use the bottom third of the stalk and pound to tenderise.)
Growing Conditions - Lemon Grass
Lemon grass likes a sunny spot and grows best in rich, free-draining soil. Like most tropical plants, it does best in hot, humid conditions, so don't plant it until at least late spring, and be prepared to water it at least every other day (aim for a fine mist). Lemon grass prefers to be sheltered from the wind. Plant in early spring or summer, and water every few days or when the soil becomes dry.
Lemongrass usually grows to around waist height, but in the right conditions it can grow up to 1.5 metres high and spreads a lot. You can contain its growth by planting it in a large pot (such as a half wine barrel) and dividing it as needed. Mint, lavender and sage are good companion plants for lemon grass.
