About Cauliflower (All Year Round)
Cauliflowers are a European vegetable with a compact creamy white head wrapped in green leaves. Try this vegetable in your cottage garden or medium-sized vegetable patch. (Sorry, caulis aren't suitable for pots or apartments.)
The All Year Round variety is a hardy addition to the garden. Relatively heat and cold tolerant, it produces medium-sized white heads that hold their shape, even when over-ripe.
Culinary Uses for Cauliflower
Cauliflower are traditionally found in European or Middle Eastern cuisine - think hearty winter warmers like Cauliflower cheese or roasted Cauli with tahini and spices, or in a vegetarian curry. We love Cauliflower puree - steam gently in milk, then add butter, mustard, salt, pepper and blitz.
Growing Conditions - Cauliflower
Cauliflower need a little tender love and care - perfect white Caulis are the mark of a real gardener! Plant in early spring or autumn, choosing a sunny spot with rich, free draining soil. Marigolds, Peas, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme and Onions are good companion plants, but avoid planting near Tomatoes. Although the All Year Round variety is more tolerant of warmth than other types, we don't recommend transplanting Cauli seedlings in the heat of summer as this can cause them to bolt.
While it doesn't like sitting in soggy soil, Cauliflower does need consistently moist soil, so don't let it dry out. This plant is also hungry, so remember to feed it regularly through the growing season. Once established, this vegetable can handle a windy spot, or a frost. As the heads develop, fold the leaves over to prevent discolouration. Protect from slugs, snails and cabbage butterflies.
