What is Mesclun?
Mesclun was traditionally a Provençal mix of baby leafy greens that add texture, colour and flavour to salads. Indeed, the word means a 'mixture'. Today, the term has evolved to include various mixes of quick-growing edible leaves that are picked when young and tender. Our Mesclun mix includes lots of delicious summer greens to brighten up your salads:
- Corn Salad
- Oakleaf Lettuce
- Curled Green Lettuce
- Curled Red Lettuce.
This mix would fit in well with a Mediterranean setting, apartment pots, coastal or cottage garden settings.
Culinary Uses for Mesclun Greens
Our Mesclun blend is so convenient for cooks with busy lives who want a ready and varied source of leafy greens for interesting salads.
Growing Conditions - Mesclun
Mesclun is very easy care - even beginner gardeners will find these plants hard to kill! This particular mix includes lots of cool-loving Asian greens, which are likely to survive into the winter months in mild climates like Northland or Coromandel.
Mesclun greens can generally handle a little wind, a light frost, or a dry spell once established. However, they grow best in sun - part shade, rich free draining soil and with regular watering to moisten the soil. Tomatoes, Onions, Chives, Garlic and Raspberries make good companion plants.
