About Climax Blueberry
Blueberries are the perfect solution for gardeners who love berries but have small spaces to play with. They can be grown as a bushy shrub, clipped into a hedge, or planted in a gorgeous patio pot. The clusters of white flowers and bushy foliage look great in lots of garden settings - from elegant spaces to apartment courtyards or rambling cottage gardens.
Climax is a Rabbiteye variety with a low chill requirement - a good choice for most North Island gardens. It will grow to about 1.5 metre tall, and 1 metre wide. To set fruit, Climax Blueberry plants need to be planted with another Blueberry that flowers at a similar time. You can expect it to fruit in two - three years (fruiting in December and January).
Culinary Uses for Blueberries
Blueberries are often called one of nature's 'superfoods' due to their high vitamin C and antioxidant levels. They are the perfect fresh lunchbox snack, or sprinkled over muesli. Blueberries can also be preserved, or frozen to for smoothies or muffins.
Blueberries are ready to pick about 7 days after turning blue. Keep picking regularly to encourage your plants to keep fruiting. Don't wash the berries before storing, as it encourages mildew.
Growing Conditions - Climax Blueberry
Blueberry plants thrive in full sun. They have quite specific soil requirements, preferring soil that is well-draining and rich in organic matter. (We recommend that you add a handful of Morganics fertiliser when planting.) More importantly, Blueberry plants need to be planted in acidic soil with a PH of about 4.5. We recommend that you select a sheltered spot for your Blueberry plants. Companion plant with Basil and Thyme.
This plant is relatively heat tolerant, but does not cope well with drought. Water your Blueberries deeply twice a week over summer and when fruiting. Keep the soil moist but not water logged. Feed them with a dose of Morganics fertiliser or compost once of twice per year.
Once established, Climax Blueberries will tolerate mild frost, although heavy late spring frosts can damage early blossoms.
What Type of Climate Do Climax Blueberries Prefer?
Climax Blueberry is suitable for warmer, North Island temperatures. This bush can be planted most of the year round, but we recommend that you plant in spring or autumn.
