What is Red and Green Oak Lettuce?

Red and Green Oak Lettuce grow in small clusters of oak-shaped leaves with a finer texture than many other Lettuce varieties.  As their names would suggest, the red variety has deep burgundy-maroon coloured leaves, while the Green Oak is bright green.  These lettuce are 'cut and come again' - you can harvest individual leaves as needed, leaving the rest for another day.

These leafy greens will fit into almost any garden setting - Cottage, Apartment, Coastal or even Elegant.  They will grow to about 20 - 30cm high, which makes them a good candidate for a border plant or a pot.

Culinary Uses for Red and Green Oak Lettuce

Red Oak Leaf lettuce has a buttery texture and a nutty, sweet flavour.  The tasty, fine leaves of Red and Green Oak Lettuce are perfect for salads and sandwiches.  Wrap some into your favourite wrap at dinner time to add some nutritious freshness.

Growing Conditions - Red and Green Oak Lettuce

Red and Green Oak are annual Lettuce plants that prefer cooler temperatures.  (You may find it difficult to get the seed to germinate if the temperature is over 20°C.) It is a good idea to pant small quantities of seed repeatedly in early spring or autumn, so that you will have a constant harvest to fall back on.  Companion plant with Radish, Beetroot, Dill, Cucumbers, Onions, Nasturtium, Thyme, White Alyssum or Coriander.

This lettuce thrives in part sun/part-shade and rich, free draining soil.  Aim to water at least two - three times a week once established - Green and Red Oak have shallow roots and need plenty of water. Protect from frosts. Pinch out tops if your Lettuce starts to bolt in warmer weather.

With minimal care, you should have a crop about 6 weeks after sowing.

      What will postage cost?

Postage varies by region, and by parcel size/weight.

Customers are asked to choose the correct postage option at checkout (urban or rural).

If you order a worm farm or garden bed and plants in the same order, the postage for the worm farm will be added to the postage for the other items.  (These items are dispatched from separate locations.)

If you live in the South Island, Waiheke or Great Barrier Island, please contact us for a custom shipping quote: info@urbanbounty.co.nz

      How often do you dispatch?

To reduce the risk of plants sitting in a courier depot over weekends, we usually ship orders on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (except public holidays).

How do you package your products?

We take extra care to water plants well and drain them before sending.  Plants are shipped in specially designed packaging, designed to reduce the risk of damage in transit. Trees and bushes are securely wrapped in paper to reduce risk of soil escaping during transit.  They are well supported with scrunched up paper to prevent movement during transit.
